In 330, the emperor Constantine founded the city of Constantinople (today: Istanbul). The "city of Constantine" was built on the grounds of the ancient city of Byzantium. The "new Rome" was supposed to become the new capital of the eastern Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire was about to rise.
