During the reign of the emperor Trajan, the Roman Empire had reached its maximum extension. The era of the Roman conquest was over. From the second century on, the Romans secured their empire by building border defenses along the boundaries of the Empire. The most famous ones are Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall in Great Britain and the limes in Germany along the rivers Rhine and Danube.
